Judge's comment

At first glance, the work seems to have been produced in one fell swoop and in an improvised manner, but if you look closely at the actual work, you will see that it was carefully designed over a well-planned support and that it took a long time to create. You can see that it is a very old painting. Combined with its structure as an extensible installation, we believe that this painting has a wealth of possibilities.

A Moment of Pleasure
Judge's comment

I was impressed by the artist's ability to intelligently manipulate the color pink, which tends to be associated with physical, vital, sexual, or fashionable images, into a contemplative work. The contrast between humans and nature, and seeing and being seen, has the potential to be developed into an even larger concept, and I look forward to seeing it in the future.

Judge's comment

At first, I felt a mysterious divinity in this work, as if it had been revived from the days of ancient wall paintings. In particular, by using the technique called Relief from a single giant tree, I feel the power of evoking the relationship between humans and nature, as if the spirit of the tree were born from the core. On the other hand, when you touch it, you can feel the soft and gentle feel of the wood, which is backed by reliable technology. I had great expectations for his future works, emitting a mysterious and powerful presence.

Destroyer
Judge's comment

Haru Matsuda's work explores new technologies and reintegrates them into the canvas, giving it a painterly materiality. In the opposite direction, idyllic landscapes and bouquets are finding new dynamism. This dialogue between painting and augmented reality creates a new form of expression, leaving it up to the viewer to decide how to reconstruct the evoked scene.

Judge's comment

The existence of boundaries and nature are chaotic and sometimes destructive. The same was probably true of the great earthquake that Goto experienced. The scenery she saw there then gave birth to new scenery. The story of the landscape is both eerie and fascinating.

Judge's comment

Using the small rooms of a movie set as the image source, the air flowing through a series of small spaces reminiscent of Metabolist architecture emits a multiplicity of sounds. It can also be seen as a sound sculpture of a disturbing era, transposing the fear and madness of an era when people were more conscious of airflow and closed rooms into form and sound.

Tomio Koyama Award

Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School Rika Minamitani

Untitled #0250
Judge's comment

Rika Minamitani's works mainly depict people, and the colors, lines, and space within the paintings are of course attractive, but perhaps due to the direction of the face or the line of sight, there is a tendency towards the outside of the painting. , I found it attractive that it took in the space where the viewer was. The expanse of space in the painting was very new, and I was able to feel the current era, which was a great experience to have and feel close to.

Do not forget to forget
Judge's comment

History is made up of an accumulation of forgetting. It is made up of a conflict between things you don't want to forget and things you want to forget. Fumimaro Ayano has succeeded in exposing the fate and paradox of history as a ``provisional structure.'' We can expect great things from him in the future.

Judge's comment

The stone carvings have a private and relaxing atmosphere, and I was fascinated by the uniqueness of Poésy. It is said to be a stone called rainbow marble, and what makes this work interesting is that the warmth of its texture naturally syncs with the artist's qualities.

Guitar Room
Judge's comment

How are painting and guitar improvisation related in this artist's work? The music is not background music, nor does it share the same image as the painting. However, their origins are connected somewhere. Only the artist knows how music and paintings are created, where they come from and where they go.

Judge's comment

Perhaps it is the influence of the coronavirus pandemic that has given me the impression that many artists are looking inside themselves, becoming aware of the oppression that lurks within them, and aiming to liberate themselves from it through their productions. While female writers with a clear critical consciousness stand out, the individual award was given to Natsumi Sasaki's work, which embodies the power of imagination to be liberated from the limitations of living things in a material with a strong presence comparable to that of life. .
