As part of the Marunouchi Japanese Wine Weeks 2025, we will be holding a Koshu Workshops by Chateau Mercian, which has a winery in Koshu City, Yamanashi Prefecture.
Approximately 40 years ago, Château Mercian was the first in Japan to introduce the sur lie method to wine made from Koshu grapes, and popularized the method of making orange wine in Japan that makes use of the color of the grape skin. It has also discovered and researched the refreshing citrus aroma components found in Koshu grapes, and has made these techniques widely available, making major contributions to the development of the entire Japanese wine industry.
Workshops will feature a tasting of Koshu wine accompanied by an explanation from Hironori Kobayashi, General Manager of Château Mercian, who discovered the aromatic component 3MH in Koshu wine about 20 years ago. This will allow participants to experience the development of Japanese wine and the revolution that has occurred in Koshu wine.

Speakers

Hironori Kobayashi, General Manager of Château Mercian, joined the company in 1999. He embarked on the path of wine research, studying winemaking techniques at the University of Bordeaux, Australia and other places around the world. During various test brewings during the 2003 brewing season, he discovered a cuvée that exuded citrus aromas from Koshu grapes that had never been detected before. He is one of the creators of the "Koshu Kiiroka" wine that was born from this.
He became the head of Waniko Winery in 2019 and will assume his current position in April 2023. He is dedicated to the consistent winemaking process from cultivation to brewing.

What is the Japan Winery Award®?

The Japan Winery Awards® is not an award that recognizes wine alone, but an award that honors the terroir (climate and environment) that produces good wine and the wine makers.
The award is given to wineries that are closest to consumers and who, after having knowledge of wines from around the world, have judged that "this is a Japanese wine that I can proudly recommend to my customers."
The awards ceremony is held every June by the Japan Winery Awards Council *, a general incorporated Organizer, and will be held for the eighth time in 2025. * Established in 2020, the council manages and hosts the Japan Winery Awards®, hosts the Japan Wine Toast Day® Events, and is involved in activities such as supporting Japanese wine producers and wineries.
