Award-winning work

Grand Prix Award

Shunsuke Matsushima (Graduate School of Information Science and Technology)

VOICE-PORTRAIT ~self-introduction~

Author's comment

This result was both a joy and a big surprise to me. I would like to take advantage of this award and continue dedicating myself to my production activities. I'm really thankful to you.

Judge's review

``VOICE-PORTRAIT ~self-introduction~'' was created by reusing images of strangers introducing themselves, as well as video footage and audio of each person talking about themselves, posted on an Internet video posting site. All footage was created by shooting Matsushima's face from the front. He observed and studied the original images of each person, and transformed the slight changes in their facial expressions into his own. The artist's gentle, young, unisex features seem strangely similar to both men and women.
The audio is from the original. Become one with others and express a shared consciousness through expressions that use yourself as a port on the web. Matsushima works on documentary films, and this is the first time he has attempted something experimental like this from the web. Through this work, Matsushima demonstrates the relationship between the individual self, which has changed significantly in the half century since Andy Warhol's video portraits, and the collective consciousness formed by a smooth media network. Second Grand Prix Award

Yasutake Iwana (Seian University of Art and Design)

[Left] Honey tree [Right] And then it's born again

Author's comment

I was 14 years old when I decided to become a painter in a small village in Mie Prefecture. Since then, I have been drawing pictures in the natural surroundings of my village, and I am really happy to receive such a wonderful award. In the future, I will begin production overseas, and this award was a great encouragement. I would like to sincerely thank everyone involved in the small village where I live. thank you very much.

Judge's review

I think it's difficult to create newness in paintings these days. I heard that Mr. Iwana goes deep into the woods in his hometown of Mie, opens a sketchbook in the dark, and draws pictures while interacting with materials such as plants and tree sap. We focused on his attitude toward painting and his potential to continue painting. I look forward to working with you in the future. (Goto)

[Top left] Stage [Bottom left] Dam [Top right] Racecourse [Bottom right] Pool

Judge's review

I was impressed by his critical spirit, which views the structures that appear in his works as representations of politics. His method is to use the dioramas he creates as the source of his work images. The reason for this evaluation was that, rather than creating a complete diorama, the work was kept as rough as possible, and the imagination that was aroused became the driving force for turning it into a painting. (Amano)

Yuka Uematsu Prize Jun Kurokawa (Tokyo University of the Arts)

Faces

Judge's review

At first glance, it may seem like a simple piece of work that divides and changes the shaded expressions, but the clever composition of the screen, reminiscent of a Noh mask, has the power to attract the viewer, and the work's high installation quality is also very impressive. It can be evaluated. (Uematsu)

Shigeo Goto Prize Toru Matsushita (Tokyo University of the Arts)

Plum tree [on the wall]

Judge's review

Expression is once again facing a new dimension of illusion and materiality. Toru Matsushita's works are highly praised for their strength, which allows them to comfortably break through the limits of painting while treating two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects equally. This is where the aesthetics of the transmission lies. It is an expression of the city's fluidity. (Goto)

Kazue Kobata Award Sayaka Toda (Joshi University of Art and Design)

[Left] Group of girls ``Theater'' [Right] Group of girls ``Window''

Judge's review

Several cultural clichés lend depth and wrinkles to the monochrome screen. Meret Oppenheim's dense fur, a walking wolf. Countless Little Red Riding Hoods tempt Wolf-kun with their erotic scent, tempt him, and laugh at him. (Kobata)

Tomio Koyama Prize Midori Sato (Tokyo Zokei University)

Uplift room

Judge's review

It was a shame that there were no works by far that made us feel explosive and overwhelming desire in this judging, but Midori Sato's work accurately captures the subject that I love, and the fetish aspect is honest. It felt good to see him showing up and showing his high level of motivation. (Koyama)

Naoki Sato Prize Yuki Matsukuma (Tokyo Zokei University)

[Left] That wasn't that important. [Right] They also trapped the sky.

Judge's review

I think it is very difficult to create a work of art through painting these days. We must think about solutions that will reach others, rather than solutions by ourselves for ourselves. I have to say that I have a long way to go if I am not always receiving things that are easy to understand, but I feel like if I come across something charming, I will get through it. (Sato)

Yuko Hasegawa Prize Yukiko Yamazaki (Kyoto University of Art and Design)

veneer

Judge's review

The depth and complex nuances of the world expressed through the combination of Japanese literary or meta-literary pictures and dialogue, as exemplified by Garo, are not easy to translate into paintings. This is because writing does not supplement representation, but stands on its own in its strength. Yamazaki skillfully combines formalist compositions, dislocation and emphasis on the meaning of text, and the meaning of images to create a third expressive space. (Hasegawa)

[Guest judge] Kohei Nawa Award Masashi Kawakami (Kyoto City University of Arts)

Crying Me Unfinished 1b

Judge's review

I don't really like the works in this exhibition, but I felt a strong sense of the impulse underlying his creative activities. I think this is a person who will grow rapidly from now on. He is probably the type who takes a critical look at the history of painting and absorbs it while tracing the techniques. I believe that he will definitely find his own unique methodology in the future. (Nawa)

anomaly and normal

Judge's review

Uniqueness of light, composition, sense and perspective. Urban edginess and poetry. I felt that this work had great future potential because it captures the ephemerality and beauty of every moment of everyday life and arouses infinite emotions. (Shu Uemura)
