From Marunouchi to the world — with a new line-up of judges:
art award tokyo marunouchi 2014

The “art award tokyo marunouchi” (hereafter “a.a.t.m.”) is the exhibition of contemporary art which aims to discover and nurture new talent for art. Besides opening up careers of young artists, the “a.a.t.m.” held at the Gyoko-dori Underground Gallery, which is directly linked to Tokyo Station and located between Marunouchi Building and Shin Marunouchi Building, provides everyone with an opportunity to encounter with art and helps artists achieve their full potential. A total number of artists introduced at the “a.a.t.m.” in its past seven exhibitions has reached 275, and at present they are actively working in Japan and abroad. With a new line-up of judges for the 8th exhibition this year, something totally new and future-oriented will be presented. Please come and enjoy the “a.a.t.m.” at Marunouchi where acute and youthful sensibilities of up-and-coming artists can be found.

Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd. Prize of “art award tokyo marunouchi“ was founded in 2012, and since then works of prize winners have been exhibited in the office buildings and commercial complex in the Marunouchi area. JUDGES

Yusaku Imamura
Director, Tokyo Wonder Site

It is wonderful and important as well that the younger generation can express themselves freely and we can support their activities. Such a social environment as to make it possible will revitalize our society and cities, because art and culture are not an addition to but the foundation of society.

Shigeo Goto
Editor, Creative Director, and Professor, Kyoto University of Art and Design

No one knows when and where a piece of work that opens up a future for art is conceived. The word “potential” becomes increasingly meaningful for our society. Though there are great possibilities in art, it will be difficult for any talent to grow unless it is discovered and nurtured. Looking back at the activities of the “a.a.t.m.” for the last seven years, I feel proud that it has laudably selected young artists leading the next generation. I will try hard to discover new talent.

Akiya Takahashi
Director, Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum

I have the impression that this art screening has become a great event so as to lend flair to the spring of Marunouchi. Each piece of work displays young artists’ delicate and intense sensibility. There is a genuine delight of the season only found in this event.

Yukie Kamiya
Chief Curator, Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art

Outside an environment where art is everyone’s concern and interest, is it possible to communicate artistic expressions with urgency and intensity to people walking about in the city? Since our imagination and creativity are beginning to be spoilt by an uncertain power nowadays, I expect young artists to show us their daring challenges.

Tomio Koyama
Director, Tomio Koyama Gallery, and Special Appointment Associate Professor, School of Global Japanese Studies, Meiji University

As in the past, I hope to see artists who will show us the world with a new perspective. We, the judges, will try hard to not miss seeing even a shred of evidence that links to the future. I wish this project would be continuously held because art has the power to change the world.

Akira Tatehata
President, Kyoto City University of Arts and Director, The Museum of Modern Art, Saitama

In recent years, the Marunouchi office environment is dubbed with an art-zone. As the “a.a.t.m.” held right in the center of this area has opened up careers of new talent, I expect to encounter with novel challenges that excite us through art.

Guest Judge
Mitsuru Kuramoto
TV writer, Musician

I believe that art is the very thing that can lead human beings to the future, freedom and happiness. Do some artworks show us wonders of anything that has never been seen before? I expect that their works will broaden the range of our choices for the future.
