MESSAGE FROM PAST WINNERS

Kota Hirakawa
(Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd. Prize winner 2013)

Kota Hirakawa

It is my pleasure to participate in a.a.t.m. that has been introducing many emerging artists, and receiving the Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd. Prize gave me a great confidence for my future practice. I hope this wonderful opportunity, where the judges seriously face and react to the graduation show, will continue and be one of the aims for art students.

I think the “a.a.t.m.” has contributed to maintain our motivation for the graduation production. As college students, we were highly motivated by the “a.a.t.m.” as a target to aim for. Nothing interesting would happen if you were only waiting until you are spoken to, so we have to produce something that impresses people walking around the exhibition space. Art has that power, and everyone can enjoy its blessing and excitement. We want to encounter with such a great piece of work as the question of “Have you seen that piece shown in the a.a.t.m.?” just slips out. It might be difficult, but we want you to have the courage to stick to what you started doing and to pay attention to what interests you most. Please keep stepping forward aiming at your goal without being afraid.

The “a.a.t.m.” provided me with an excellent opportunity for continuing my production. Thanks to the project, I could see many works produced by artists of my generation and exchange views with them. I still remember the words of Ms. Kazue Kobata, one of the screening judges, “You understand nothing.” You might feel hopeful and hopeless in turns with the result of the screening, but I would like you to not worry about the result but to enjoy that special time and space.
