Twilight, Shinhanga
-From Kobayashi Kiyochika to Kawase Hasui

Date: Thu February 19, 2026
Until May 24th Sun

Only that light never faded.
Kobayashi Kiyochika, one of the last ukiyo-e artists, began his series of "Tokyo Famous Places," in 1876 (Meiji 9), bringing about a major revolution in Meiji-era landscape prints. These works, depicting the expressions of twilight and the glimmering light in the darkness, are known as "light paintings," capturing the atmosphere of Edo through deep shadows. This perspective echoes the sentimentality of those who yearned for the fading vestiges of Edo and the desire of photography to document them. This style distinguishes itself from the "Kaika-e" (modernization) style, which portrayed the city undergoing transformation through the vibrant colors of contemporary ukiyo-e artists, optimistically capturing the transformations of the modernized city. Shin-hanga (new prints), which aimed to revive ukiyo-e at the end of the Meiji period, inherited not only the techniques but also the sentimental appeal that Kiyochika and others sought to capture in their paintings, discovering new Japanese landscapes. This exhibition traces the history of landscape prints from Kiyochika to Yoshida Hiroshi and Kawase Hasui through the Muller Collection at the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art.
