Atsuhiko Misawa

2017-2019/Bronze, paint/Japan
Over the past decade, Misawa has released ``Animals,'' an animal-themed work, and has gained support. The animals, carved and painted to almost life-size bronze, have an overwhelming presence and evoke memories and images in the viewer. When we hear the word ``bear,'' contradictory images coexist: a cute character and a ferocious animal that reigns at the top of the ecosystem. This work expresses a middle ground between polarizing images. The menacing pose with two legs is symbolic of a human-like bear, which is not seen in other animals. I am. What does that look look like to you? Please try to make eye contact once in a while. Bears are always there.
